In late May 2019 following weeks of mystery video packages showing a man targeting IWGP United States Champion Juice Robinson, Jon Moxley was revealed as the culprit following his departure from WWE mere weeks prior. He would receive a new nickname, The Death Rider.

Now a member of the AEW roster, Moxley would win the title from Juice on his debut at Best of the Super Juniors 26 on June 5th. It would be agreed by Tony Khan and Jon Moxley that his appearances for New Japan would be allowed to continue. This would lead to Moxley competing in the G1 for the first time, failing to advance from Block B.

During his first reign as United States Champion, Moxley would make zero defenses of his title. He would eventually be stripped of the belt following travel issues stemming from a Typhoon that hit Japan in October, right before his first scheduled defense against Juice Robinson. Determined to regain the title he never lost, a Texas Death Match was booked for Night One of Wrestle Kingdom 14 against now champion Lance Archer.

Moxley would once again become IWGP US Champ, before challenging Juice Robinson to a match for the next night during a post-match promo. He would then end their long running feud, making his first successful title defense. Moxley has since defended his championship against Minoru Suzuki, but once again, the US Championship is in limbo due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
