Last night’s episode of WWE SmackDown saw the return of a Hall of Fame talent.

The show would open up with The Bloodline (WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos & Paul Heyman) making their way to the ring.

Heyman would praise Roman, before explaining why he turned his back on Brock Lesnar at WWE Royal Rumble to realign with his Tribal Chief.

Heyman would call for the Oklahoma City crowd to acknowledge Reigns, before being interrupted by the music of Bill Goldberg, who stormed to the ring.

Goldberg would say that he does acknowledge Reigns, but only as his own victim.

He would then issue a challenge for the WWE Universal Championship, before telling Roman that he’s next. WWE would later confirm the match for the upcoming WWE Elimination Chamber event in Saudi Arabia.

This will likely be Roman’s last defence of his title before battling Royal Rumble winner Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 in April, with Goldberg having very little chance of walking away as the winner.

Three of Goldberg’s last four WWE matches have been for a major title belt, with him coming out on the losing side every time. He lost to Braun Strowman for the Universal title at WrestleMania 36, Drew McIntyre at Royal Rumble 2021 for the WWE Championship, and then Bobby Lashley at SummerSlam 2021, again for the WWE title.

Roman Reigns was Goldberg’s original opponent for the Mania 36 match, although he had to pull out due to the ongoing pandemic, with the match now set to take place 2 years later.
